IA
-
The spirits of the forestB
That to the winds give voiceC
I lie the livelong April dayD
And wonder what it is they sayD
That makes the leaves rejoiceC
-
The spirits of the forestB
That breathe in bud and bloomE
I walk within the black haw brakeF
And wonder how it is they makeF
The bubbles of perfumeE
-
The spirits of the forestB
That live in every springG
I lean above the brook's bright blueH
And wonder what it is they doH
That makes the water singG
-
The spirits of the forestB
That haunt the sun's green glowI
Down fungus ways of fern I stealJ
And wonder what they can concealJ
In dews that twinkles soI
-
The spirits of the forestB
They hold me heart and handK
And oh the bird they send by lightL
The jack o' lantern gleam by nightL
To guide to FairylandK

IIA
-
The time when dog tooth violetsM
Hold up inverted horns of goldN
The elvish cups that Spring upsetsO
With dripping feet when April wetsO
The sun and shadow marbled woldN
-
Is come And by each leafing wayD
The sorrel drops pale blots of pinkP
And like an angled star a fayD
Sets on her forehead's pallid dayD
The blossoms of the trillium winkP
-
Within the vale by rock and streamQ
A fragile fairy porcelainR
Blue as a baby's eyes a dreamQ
The bluets blow and gleam in gleamQ
The sun shot dog woods flash with rainS
-
It is the time to cast off careT
To make glad intimates of theseO
The frank faced sunbeam laughing thereT
The great heart wind that bids us shareT
The optimism of the treesO
-
-
IIIA
-
The white ghosts of the flowersO
The green ghosts of the treesO
They haunt the blooming bowersO
They haunt the wildwood hoursO
And whisper in the breezeO
-
For in the wildrose placesO
And on the beechen knollU
My soul hath seen their facesO
My soul hath met their racesO
And felt their dim controlU
-
-
IVD
-
Crab apple buds whose bellsO
The mouth of April kissedV
That hang like rosy shellsO
Around a naiad's wristV
Pink as dawn tinted mistV
-
And paw paw buds whose darkW
Deep auburn blossoms shakeF
On boughs as 'neath the barkW
A dryad's eyes awakeF
Brown as a midnight lakeF
-
These with symbolic bloomsO
Of wind flower and wild phloxO
I found among the gloomsO
Of hill lost woods and rocksO
Lairs of the mink and foxO
-
The beetle in the brushX
The bird about the creekY
The bee within the hushX
And I whose heart was meekY
Stood still to hear these speakY
-
The language that recordsO
In flower syllablesO
The hieroglyphic wordsO
Of beauty who enspellsO
The world and aye compelsO
