Winter Days Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDBECE FGHGIGJIK LMNMNMOP

'These winter days ' my father saysA
'When mornings blow and bite and freezeB
And hens sit cackling in the strawC
Stiff with the frost as gates that wheezeB
Remind me of my youth when rawD
The day broke and beneath the treesB
Wild winds would twistE
I went to work with axe and sawC
Or stopped to blow my mittened fistE
-
'These winter noons ' my father croonsF
'When eggs the hens have hardly laidG
Crack open with the cold and cowsH
Drink through the hole a heel has madeG
Some rustic in his huddled blouseI
Bring back the noons when with a spadeG
Down on the farmJ
I pathed the snow from barn to houseI
And beat my arms to keep me warmK
-
'These winter nights ' so he recitesL
'With those old nights are right in tuneM
When cocks crew out the hours till dawnN
And all night long the owlet's croonM
Quavered and quivered far withdrawnN
And cold beneath the freezing moonM
The old fox houndO
Bayed where the icicles glittered wanP
And all the old house slumbered sound '-
