Winter Days Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDBECE FGHGIGJIK LMNMNMOP'These winter days ' my father says | A |
'When mornings blow and bite and freeze | B |
And hens sit cackling in the straw | C |
Stiff with the frost as gates that wheeze | B |
Remind me of my youth when raw | D |
The day broke and beneath the trees | B |
Wild winds would twist | E |
I went to work with axe and saw | C |
Or stopped to blow my mittened fist | E |
- | |
'These winter noons ' my father croons | F |
'When eggs the hens have hardly laid | G |
Crack open with the cold and cows | H |
Drink through the hole a heel has made | G |
Some rustic in his huddled blouse | I |
Bring back the noons when with a spade | G |
Down on the farm | J |
I pathed the snow from barn to house | I |
And beat my arms to keep me warm | K |
- | |
'These winter nights ' so he recites | L |
'With those old nights are right in tune | M |
When cocks crew out the hours till dawn | N |
And all night long the owlet's croon | M |
Quavered and quivered far withdrawn | N |
And cold beneath the freezing moon | M |
The old fox hound | O |
Bayed where the icicles glittered wan | P |
And all the old house slumbered sound ' | - |
