The wind was on the forestA
And silence on the woldB
And darkness on the watersC
And heaven was starry coldB
When Sleep with mystic magicD
Bade me this thing beholdB

This side an iron woodlandE
That side an iron wasteF
And heaven a tower of ironG
Wherein the wan moon pacedF
Still as a phantom womanH
Ice eyed and icy facedF

And through the haunted towerI
Of silence and of nightJ
My Soul and I went onlyK
My Soul whose face was whiteJ
Whose one hand signed me listenH
One bore a taper lightJ

For lo a voice behind meK
Kept sighing in my earL
The dreams my flesh acceptedM
My mind refused to hearL
Of one I loved and loved notN
Whose spirit now spake nearO

And lo a voice before meK
Kept calling constantlyK
The hopes my mind acceptedM
My flesh refused to seeK
Of one I loved and loved notN
Whose spirit spake to meK

This way the one would bid meK
This way the other saithP
Sweet is the voice behind meK
Of LIFE that followethP
And sweet the voice before meK
Of LIFE whose name is DEATHP
