He told a story to herA
A story old yet newB
And was it of the Fa ry FolkC
That dance along the dewB
-
The night was hung with silenceD
As a room is hung with clothE
And soundless through the rose sweet hushF
Swooned dim the down white mothE
-
Along the east a shimmerA
A tenuous breath of flameG
From which as from a bath of lightH
Nymph like the girl moon cameG
-
And pendent in the purpleI
Of heaven like firefliesJ
Bubbles of gold the great stars blewB
From windows of the skiesJ
-
He told a story to herA
A story full of dreamsK
And was it of the Elfin thingsL
That haunt the thin moonbeamsK
-
Upon the hill a thorn treeM
Crooked and gnarled and grayN
Against the moon seemed some crutch'd hagO
Dragging a child awayN
-
And in the vale a runnelB
That dripped from shelf to shelfP
Seemed in the night a woodland witchQ
Who muttered to herselfP
-
Along the land a zephyrA
Whose breath was wild perfumeR
That seemed a sorceress who woveS
Sweet spells of beam and bloomR
-
He told a story to herA
A story young yet oldT
And was it of the mystic thingsL
Men's eyes shall ne'er beholdT
-
They heard the dew drip faintlyB
From out the green cupped leafU
They heard the petals of the roseV
Unfolding from their sheafU
-
They saw the wind light footingW
The waters into sheenX
They saw the starlight kiss to sleepY
The blossoms on the greenX
-
They heard and saw these wondersZ
These things they saw and heardA2
And other things within the heartB2
For which there is no wordA2
-
He told a story to herA
The story men call LoveC2
Whose echoes fill the ages pastD2
And the world ne'er tires ofC2
