A story old yet new	B
And was it of the Fa ry Folk	C
That dance along the dew	B

The night was hung with silence	D
As a room is hung with cloth	E
And soundless through the rose sweet hush	F
Swooned dim the down white moth	E

Along the east a shimmer	A
A tenuous breath of flame	G
From which as from a bath of light	H
Nymph like the girl moon came	G

And pendent in the purple	I
Of heaven like fireflies	J
Bubbles of gold the great stars blew	B
From windows of the skies	J

He told a story to her	A
A story full of dreams	K
And was it of the Elfin things	L
That haunt the thin moonbeams	K

Upon the hill a thorn tree	M
Crooked and gnarled and gray	N
Against the moon seemed some crutch'd hag	O
Dragging a child away	N

And in the vale a runnel	B
That dripped from shelf to shelf	P
Seemed in the night a woodland witch	Q
Who muttered to herself	P

Along the land a zephyr	A
Whose breath was wild perfume	R
That seemed a sorceress who wove	S
Sweet spells of beam and bloom	R

He told a story to her	A
A story young yet old	T
And was it of the mystic things	L
Men's eyes shall ne'er behold	T

They heard the dew drip faintly	B
From out the green cupped leaf	U
They heard the petals of the rose	V
Unfolding from their sheaf	U

They saw the wind light footing	W
The waters into sheen	X
They saw the starlight kiss to sleep	Y
The blossoms on the green	X

They heard and saw these wonders	Z
These things they saw and heard	A2
And other things within the heart	B2
For which there is no word	A2
