''He cometh not ' she said 'A
MARIANAB
-
It will not be to day and yetC
I think and dream it will and letC
The slow uncertainty deviseD
So many sweet excuses metC
With the old doubt in hope's disguiseD
-
The panes were sweated with the dawnE
Yet through their dimness shriveled drawnE
The aigret of one princess featherF
One monk's hood tuft with oilets wanG
I glimpsed dead in the slaying weatherF
-
This morning when my window's chintzD
I drew how gray the day was SinceD
I saw him yea all days are grayH
I gazed out on my dripping quinceD
Defruited gnarled then turned awayH
-
To weep but did not weep but feltI
A colder anguish than did meltI
About the tearful visaged yearJ
Then flung the lattice wide and smeltI
The autumn sorrow Rotting nearJ
-
The rain drenched sunflowers bent and bleachedK
Up which the frost nipped gourd vines reachedK
And morning glories seeded o'erF
With ashen aiglets whence beseechedK
One last bloom frozen to the coreL
-
The podded hollyhocks that FallM
Had stripped of finery by the wallM
Rustled their tatters dripped and drippedN
The fog thick on them near them allM
The tarnished haglike zinnias tippedN
-
I felt the death and loved it yeaH
To have it nearer sought the grayH
Chill fading garth Yet could not weepO
But wandered in an aimless wayH
And sighed with weariness for sleepO
-
Mine were the fog the frosty stalksD
The weak lights on the leafy walksD
The shadows shivering with the coldP
The breaking heart the lonely talksD
The last dim ruined marigoldP
-
But when to night the moon swings lowQ
A great marsh marigold of glowQ
And all my garden with the seaD
Moans then through moon and mist I knowQ
My love will come to comfort meD
