The Word In The Wood Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBCADEE F GHIJGJKL F MNNOMOOP Q ROOSRST

The acorn oakA
Sullens to sombre crimson all its leavesB
And where it hugely heavesB
A giant head dark as congested bloodC
The gum tree towers against the sky a strokeA
Of purpling gold and every blur of woodD
Is color on the pallet that she dropsE
The Autumn dreaming on the hazed hilltopsE

And as I wentG
Through golden forests in a golden landH
Where Magic waved her wandI
And dimmed the air with dreams my boyhood knewJ
Enchantment met me and again she bentG
Her face to mine and smiled with eyes of blueJ
And kissed me on the mouth and bade me heedK
Old tales again from books no man may readL

And at her wordM
The wood became transfigured and beholdN
With hair of wavy goldN
A presence walked there and its beauty wasO
The beauty not of Earth and then I heardM
Within my heart vague voices murmurousO
And multitudinous as leaves that sowO
The firmament when winds of autumn blowP

-
And I perceivedR
The voices were but one voice made of sighsO
That sorrowed in this wiseO
'I am the child soul that grew up and diedS
The child soul of the world that once believedR
Believed in me but long ago deniedS
The Faery Faith it needs no more to dayT
The folk lore Beauty long since passed away '-
