The Road Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACBB ADED E EBE BEEEC

Along the road I smelt the roseA
The wild rose in its veil of rainB
And how it was God only knowsA
But with its scent I saw againC
A girl's face at a window paneB
Gazing through tears that fell like rainB
-
'Tis twelve years now so I supposeA
Twelve years ago 'Twas then I thoughtD
'Love is a burden bitter sweetE
And he who runs must not be fraughtD
Free must his heart be as his feet '-
-
Again I heard myself repeatE
'Love is a burden bitter sweet '-
Yet all my aims had come to noughtE
I smelt the rose I felt the rainB
Lonely I stood upon the roadE
-
Of one thing only was I fainB
To be delivered of my loadE
A moment more and on I strodeE
I cared not whither led the roadE
That led not back to her againC
