ITS friendship and its carelessnessA
Did lead me many a mileB
Through goat's rue with its dim caressC
And pink and pearl white smileB
Through crowfoot with its golden lureD
And promise of far thingsE
And sorrel with its glance demureD
And wide eyed wonderingsE
-
It led me with its innocenceE
As childhood leads the wiseE
With elbows here of tattered fenceE
And blue of wildflower eyesE
With whispers low of leafy speechF
And brook sweet utteranceE
With bird like words of oak and beechF
And whisperings clear as Pan'sE
-
It led me with its childlike charmG
As candor leads desireH
Now with a clasp of blossomy armG
A butterfly kiss of fireH
Now with a toss of tousled goldI
A barefoot sound of greenJ
A breath of musk of mossy moldI
With vague allurements keenJ
-
It led me with remembered thingsE
Into an old time valeK
Peopled with fa ry glimmeringsE
And flower like fancies paleK
Where fungous forms stood gold and grayL
Each in its mushroom gownM
And roofed with red glimpsed far awayL
A little toadstool townM
-
It led me with an idle easeE
A vagabond look and airN
A sense of ragged arms and kneesE
In weeds grown everywhereN
It led me as a gypsy leadsE
To dingles no one knowsE
With beauty burred with thorny seedsE
And tangled wild with roseE
-
It led me as simplicityO
Leads age and its demandsE
With bee beat of its ecstasyO
And berry stained touch of handsE
With round revealments puff ball whiteP
Through rents of weedy brownM
And petaled movements of delightP
In roseleaf limb and gownM
-
It led me on and on and onQ
Beyond the Far AwayL
Into a world long dead and goneR
The world of YesterdayL
A fa ry world of memoryO
Old with its hills and streamsE
Wherein the child I used to beO
Still wanders with his dreamsE
