The Passing Of The Beautiful Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIJKK LLMMNNOOPQRRSSTTUUSS VWXXX

On southern winds shot through with amber lightA
Breeding soft balm and clothed in cloudy whiteA
The lily fingered Spring came o'er the hillsB
Waking the crocus and the daffodilsB
O'er the cold earth she breathed a tender sighC
The maples sang and flung their banners highC
Their crimson tasseled pennons and the elmD
Bound his dark brows with a green crested helmD
Beneath the musky rot of Autumn's leavesE
Under the forest's myriad naked eavesE
Life woke and rose in gold and green and blueF
Robed in the star light of the twinkling dewF
With timid tread adown the barren woodG
Spring held her way when lo before her stoodG
White mantled Winter wagging his white headH
Stormy his brow and stormily he saidH
Sole lord of terror and the fiend of stormI
Crowned king of despots my envermeiled armJ
Slew these vast woodlands crimsoning all their bowersK
Thou Spirit of Beauty with thy bursting flowersK
Swollen with pride wouldst thou usurp my throneL
Long planted here deep in the waste's wild moanL
Sworn foe of beauty with a band of iceM
I'll strangle thee tho' thou be welcomer thriceM
So round her throat a band of blasting frostN
Her sainted throat of snow he coiled and crossedN
And cast her on the dark unfeeling moldO
Her tender blossoms blighted in the foldO
Of her warm bosoms trembling bowed their browsP
In holy meekness or in scattered rowsQ
Huddled about her white and silent feetR
Or on pale lips laid fond last kisses sweetR
And died lilacs all musky for the MayS
And bluer violets and snow drops layS
Silent and dead but yet divinely fairT
Like ice gems glist'ning in Spring's lovely hairT
The Beautiful so innocent sweet and pureU
Why must thou perish and the evil still endureU
Too soon must pass the Beautiful awayS
Too long doth Terror hold anarchal swayS
Alas sad heart bow not beneath the painV
Time changeth all the Beautiful wakes againW
We can not question such a higher powerX
Knows best what bud is ripest in its flowerX
Silently plucks it at the fittest hourX
