Five rotten gables look upon	A
Wan rotting roses and rank weeds	B
Old iron gates on posts of stone	C
Dim dingles where the vermin breeds	B
Five rotten gables black appear	D
Above bleak yews and cedars sad	E
And thence they see the sleepy mere	D
In lazy lilies clad	E

At morn the slender dragon fly	F
A burnished ray of light darts past	G
The knightly bee comes charging by	F
Winding a surly blast	G
At noon amid the fervid leaves	H
The quarreling insects gossip hot	I
And thro' the grass the spider weaves	H
A weft with silver shot	I

At eve the hermit cricket rears	J
His vesper song in shrillful shrieks	K
The bat a blund'ring voyage steers	J
Beneath the sunset's streaks	K
The slimy worm gnaws at the bud	L
The Katydid talks dreamily	F
The sullen owl in monkish hood	M
Chants in the old beech tree	N

At night the blist'ring dew comes down	O
And lies as white as autumn frost	P
Upon the green upon the brown	O
You'd deem each bush a ghost	Q
The crescent moon with golden prow	R
Plows thro' the frothy cloud and 's gone	S
A large blue star comes out to glow	F
Above the house alone	C

The oozy lilies lie asleep	T
On glist'ring beds of welt'ring leaves	H
The starlight through the trees doth peep	T
And fairy garments weaves	H
And in the mere all lily fair	U
A maiden's corpse floats evermore	V
Naked and in her raven hair	U
Wrapped o'er and o'er	W

And when the clock of yon old town	O
Peals midnight o'er the fenny heath	X
In haunted chambers up and down	O
Marches the pomp of Death	Y
And stiff stiff silks make rustlings	H
Sweep sable satins murmuringly	F
And then a voice so sweetly sings	H
An olden melody	N

And foam white creatures flit and dance	H
Along the dusty galleries	H
With long loose locks that strangely glance	H
And demon glaring eyes	H
But in one chamber when the moon	Z
Casts her cold silver wreath on wreath	X
Holds there proud state on ghastly throne	C
The skeleton Death	Y
