Five rotten gables look uponA
Wan rotting roses and rank weedsB
Old iron gates on posts of stoneC
Dim dingles where the vermin breedsB
Five rotten gables black appearD
Above bleak yews and cedars sadE
And thence they see the sleepy mereD
In lazy lilies cladE
-
At morn the slender dragon flyF
A burnished ray of light darts pastG
The knightly bee comes charging byF
Winding a surly blastG
At noon amid the fervid leavesH
The quarreling insects gossip hotI
And thro' the grass the spider weavesH
A weft with silver shotI
-
At eve the hermit cricket rearsJ
His vesper song in shrillful shrieksK
The bat a blund'ring voyage steersJ
Beneath the sunset's streaksK
The slimy worm gnaws at the budL
The Katydid talks dreamilyF
The sullen owl in monkish hoodM
Chants in the old beech treeN
-
At night the blist'ring dew comes downO
And lies as white as autumn frostP
Upon the green upon the brownO
You'd deem each bush a ghostQ
The crescent moon with golden prowR
Plows thro' the frothy cloud and 's goneS
A large blue star comes out to glowF
Above the house aloneC
-
The oozy lilies lie asleepT
On glist'ring beds of welt'ring leavesH
The starlight through the trees doth peepT
And fairy garments weavesH
And in the mere all lily fairU
A maiden's corpse floats evermoreV
Naked and in her raven hairU
Wrapped o'er and o'erW
-
And when the clock of yon old townO
Peals midnight o'er the fenny heathX
In haunted chambers up and downO
Marches the pomp of DeathY
And stiff stiff silks make rustlingsH
Sweep sable satins murmuringlyF
And then a voice so sweetly singsH
An olden melodyN
-
And foam white creatures flit and danceH
Along the dusty galleriesH
With long loose locks that strangely glanceH
And demon glaring eyesH
But in one chamber when the moonZ
Casts her cold silver wreath on wreathX
Holds there proud state on ghastly throneC
The skeleton DeathY
