COME let's climb into our atticA
In our house that's old and grayB
Life you're old and I'm rheumaticA
And it's close of dayB
Lay aside your rags and tattersC
Shirt and shoes so soiled with clayB
They're no use now Nothing mattersC
It is close of dayB
Let's to bed It's cold No fireD
And no lamp to make a rayB
Where's our servant young DesireD
Gone at close of dayB
Oft she served us with fine glancesE
Helped us out at work and playB
She is gone now better chancesF
And it's close of dayB
Where is Hope who flaunted scarletG
Hope who led us oft astrayB
Has she proved herself a harlotG
At the close of dayB
What's become of Dream and VisionH
Friends we thought were here to stayB
Has life clapped the two in prisonH
At the close of dayB
They are gone and how we miss themI
They who made our garret gayB
How we used to hug and kiss themI
But 'tis close of dayB
Where's friend Love now Who supposesE
Has he flung himself awayB
Left us for a wreath of rosesE
At the close of dayB
And where's Song the soul electedJ
Has he quit us too for ayeK
Was it poverty he suspectedJ
Near the close of dayB
How our attic rang their laughterD
How it echoed laugh and layB
None may take their place hereafterD
It is close of dayB
We have done the best we could doL
Let us kneel awhile and prayB
Now no matter what we would doL
It is close of dayB
Let's to bed then It's DecemberD
Long enough since it was MayB
Let's forget it and rememberD
Now 'tis close of dayB
