The Old Barn Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABA CDCEC FGFGF HIJIJ KLKLK MNMNM

Low swallow swept and grayA
Between the orchard and the springB
All its wide windows overflowing hayA
And crannied doors a swingB
The old barn stands to dayA
-
Deep in its hay the Leghorn hidesC
A round white nest and humming softD
On roof and rafter or its log rude sidesC
Black in the sun shot loftE
The building hornet glidesC
-
Along its corn crib cautiouslyF
As thieving fingers skulks the ratG
Or in warped stalls of fragrant timothyF
Gnaws at some loosened slatG
Or passes shadowyF
-
A dream of drouth made audibleH
Before its door hot smooth and shrillI
All day the locust sings What other spellJ
Shall hold it lazier stillI
Than the long day's now tellJ
-
Dusk and the cricket and the strainK
Of tree toad and of frog and starsL
That burn above the rich west's ribb d stainK
And dropping pasture barsL
And cow bells up the laneK
-
Night and the moon and katydidM
And leaf lisp of the wind touched boughsN
And mazy shadows that the fireflies thridM
And sweet breath of the cowsN
And the lone owl here hidM
