I stood in the forest on HURON HILLA
When the night was old and the world was stillA
-
The Wind was a wizard who muttering strodeB
In a raven cloak on a haunted roadB
-
The Sound of Water a witch who croonedB
Her spells to the rocks the rain had runedB
-
And the Gleam of the Dew on the fern's green tipC
Was a sylvan passing with robe a dripC
-
The Light of the Stars was a glimmering maidB
Who stole an elfin from glade to gladeB
-
The Scent of the Woods in the delicate airD
A wildflower shape with chilly hairD
-
And Silence a spirit who sat aloneE
With a lifted finger and eyes of stoneE
-
And it seemed to me these six were metB
To greet a greater who came not yetB
-
And the speech they spoke that I listened toB
Was the archetype of the speech I knewB
-
For the Wind clasped hands with the Water's rushF
And I heard them whisper Hush oh hushF
-
The Light of the Stars and the Dew's cool gleamG
Touched lips and murmured Dream oh dreamG
-
The Scent of the Woods and the Silence deepH
Sighed bosom to bosom Sleep oh sleepH
-
And so for a moment the six were dumbI
Then exulted together They come they comeI
-
And I stood expectant and seemed to hearJ
A visible music drawing nearK
-
And the first who came was the Captain MoonL
Bearing a shield in GOD'S House hewnL
-
Then an Army of glamour a glittering HostB
Beleaguered the night from coast to coastB
-
And the world was filled with spheric fireM
From the palpitant chords of many a lyreN
-
As out of the East the MOONMEN cameO
Smiting their harps of silver and flameO
-
More beauty and grace did their forms expressP
Than the QUEEN OF LOVE'S white nakednessP
-
More chastity too their faces heldB
Than the snowy breasts of DIANA swelledB
-
Translucent limbed I saw the beatB
In their hearts of pearl of the golden heatB
-
And the hair they tossed was a crystal lightB
And the eyes beneath it were burning whiteB
-
Their hands that lifted their feet that fellQ
Made the darkness blossom to asphodelQ
-
And the heavens the hills and the streams they trodB
Shone pale with th' communicated GodB
-
A placid frenzy a waking tranceP
A soft oracular radianceP
-
Wrapped forms that moved as melodies moveR
Laurelled with god head and halo'd with loveS
-
So there in the forest on HURON HILLQ
The MOONMEN camped when the world was stillQ
-
What wonder that they who have looked on theseP
Are lost to the earth's realitiesP
-
That they sit aside with a far off lookT
Dreaming the dreams that are writ in no bookT
-
That they walk alone till the day they dieB
Even as I yea even as IB
