The Moon In The Wood Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAAACACADEFGFH I JAJAJKAKAKLMLML I ANANAOPOPOAAAAAFrom hill and hollow side by side | A |
The shadows came like dreams to sit | B |
And watch mysterious sunset eyed | A |
The wool winged moths and bats aflit | A |
And the lone owl that cried and cried | A |
And then the forest rang a gong | C |
Hoarse toadlike and from out the gate | A |
Of darkness came a sound of song | C |
As of a gnome that called his mate | A |
Who answered in his own strange tongue | D |
And all the forest leaned to hear | E |
And saw from forth the entangling trees | F |
A naked spirit drawing near | G |
A glimmering presence whom the breeze | F |
Kept whispering 'Forward Have no fear ' | H |

The woodland seeming at a loss | J |
Afraid to breathe or make a sound | A |
Poured where her silvery feet should cross | J |
A dripping pathway on the ground | A |
And hedged it in with ferns and moss | J |
And then the silence sharply shook | K |
A cricket tambourine and Night | A |
From out her musky bosom took | K |
A whippoorwill flute and lost to sight | A |
Sat piping to a wildwood brook | K |
Until from out the shadows came | L |
A furtive foot a gleam a glow | M |
And with a lamp of crystal flame | L |
The spirit stole as white as snow | M |
And put the firmament to shame | L |

Then up and down vague movements went | A |
As if the faeries sought an herb | N |
And here and there a bush was bent | A |
A wildflower raised the wood pool's curb | N |
Was circled with a scarf of scent | A |
And deep within her house of weeds | O |
Old Mystery hung a glowworm lamp | P |
And decked her hair with firefly beads | O |
And sate herself 'mid dew and damp | P |
And crooned a love song to the reeds | O |
Then through the gates of solitude | A |
Where Witchery her shuttle plied | A |
The Spirit entered white and nude | A |
And where she went on every side | A |
Dreams followed through the solitude | A |
