The moon in the East is glowingA
I sit by the moaning seaB
The mists down the sea are blowingA
Down the sea all dewilyC
-
The sands at my feet are shakingA
The stars in the sky are wanD
The mists for the shore are makingA
With a glimmer drifting onD
-
From the mist comes a song sweet wailingA
In the voice of a love lorn maidE
And I hear her gown soft trailingA
As she doth lightly wadeE
-
The night hangs pale above meB
Upon her starry throneF
And I know the maid doth love meB
Who maketh such sweet moanF
-
From out the mist comes trippingA
A Mermaiden full fairG
Across the white sea skippingA
With locks of tawny hairG
-
Her locks with sea ooze drippingA
She wrings with a snowy handH
Her dress is thinly clippingA
Two breasts which perfect standH
-
Oh she was fair as the heavenI
On an autumnal eveJ
And my love to her was givenI
When I saw how she did grieveJ
-
Amort o'er the sea came speedingA
This sea sprite samite cladK
And my heart for love was bleedingA
But its beating I forbadeE
-
On the strand where the sand was rockingA
She stood and sang an airG
And the winds in her hair kept lockingA
Their fingers cool and bareG
-
Soft in her arms did she fold meB
While sweet and low she moanedL
Her love and her grief she told meB
And the ocean sighed and groanedL
-
But I stilled my heart's wild beatingA
For I knew her love was dimM
Full coldly received her greetingA
Tho' my life burnt in each limbM
-
In my ear right sweet she was sighingA
With the voice of the pink veined shellsN
Her arms 'round my neck kept tyingA
And gazed in mine eyes' deep wellsN
-
With her kisses cold did she woo meB
But I dimmed my heart's wild beatO
With the stars of her eyes did she sue meB
But their passion did mine defeatO
-
With the cloud of her sea dipped tressesP
She veiled her beautiful faceQ
And oh how I longed for her kissesR
And sighed for her soft embraceQ
-
But out in the mist she went wailingA
When the dawn besilvered the nightS
With her robes of samite trailingA
In the foam flowers sad and whiteS
-
Like a spirit grieved went moaningA
In a twilight over the seaB
And it seemed the night was groaningA
And my heart beat wild in meB
-
But I hushed my heart's fierce beatingA
For a Mermaid false was sheB
Yet I sighed at her faintly fleetingA
Across the dim dark seaB
-
The moon all withered is glowingA
The mist and she are goneT
My heart to ice is growingA
And I sob at the coming dawnT
