The Man Hunt Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AA BC DD EE FF GH II EE EE DD JJ KK EE LL BB MN GG OP

THE woods stretch wild to the mountain sideA
And the brush is deep where a man may hideA
-
They have brought the bloodhounds up againB
To the roadside rock where they found the slainC
-
They have brought the bloodhounds up and theyD
Have taken the trail to the mountain wayD
-
Three times they circled the trail and crossedE
And thrice they found it and thrice they lostE
-
Now straight through the pines and the underbrushF
They follow the scent through the forest's hushF
-
And their deep mouthed bay is a pulse of fearG
In the heart of the wood that the man must hearH
-
The man who crouches among the treesI
From the stern faced men that follow theseI
-
A huddle of rocks that the ooze has mossedE
And the trail of the hunted again is lostE
-
An upturned pebble a bit of groundE
A heel has trampled the trail is foundE
-
And the woods re echo the bloodhounds' bayD
As again they take to the mountain wayD
-
A rock a ribbon of road a ledgeJ
With a pine tree clutching its crumbling edgeJ
-
A pine that the lightning long since claveK
Whose huge roots hollow a ragged caveK
-
A shout a curse and a face aghastE
And the human quarry is laired at lastE
-
The human quarry with clay clogged hairL
And eyes of terror who waits them thereL
-
That glares and crouches and rising thenB
Hurls clods and curses at dogs and menB
-
Until the blow of a gun butt laysM
Him stunned and bleeding upon his faceN
-
A rope a prayer and an oak tree nearG
And a score of hands to swing him clearG
-
A grim black thing for the setting sunO
And the moon and the stars to look uponP
