Roses brier on brierA
Like a hedge of fireA
Walled it from the world and rolledB
Crimson 'round it manifoldB
Blossoms 'mid which once of oldB
Walked my Heart's DesireA
-
There the golden HoursC
Dwelt and 'mid the bowersC
Beauty wandered like a maidD
And the Dreams that never fadeD
Sat within its haunted shadeD
Gazing at the flowersC
-
There the winds that varyE
Melody and marryE
Perfume unto perfume wentF
Whispering to the buds that bentF
Messages whose wondermentG
Made them sweet to carryE
-
There the waters hoaryE
Murmured many a storyE
To the leaves that leaned aboveH
Listening to their tales of loveH
While the happiness thereofH
Flushed their green with gloryE
-
There the sunset's shimmerA
'Mid the bowers dimmerA
Than the woods where Fable dwellsI
And Romance her legends tellsI
Wrought dim dreams and dimmer spellsI
Filled with golden glimmerA
-
There at night the wonderA
Of the moon would sunderA
Foliage deeps with breast of pearlJ
Wandering like a glimmering girlJ
Fair of form and bright of curlJ
Through the trees and underA
-
There the stars would followK
Over hill and hollowK
Spirit shapes that danced the dewL
From frail cups of sparry hueL
Firefly forms that fleeter flewL
Than the fleetest swallowK
-
There my heart made merryE
There 'mid bloom and berryE
Dreamed the dreams that are no moreM
In that garden lost of yoreM
Set in seas without a shoreM
That no man may ferryE
-
Where perhaps her lyreN
Wreathed with serest brierA
Sorrow strikes now sad its goldB
Sighing where 'mid roses oldB
Fair of face and dead and coldB
Lies my Heart's DesireA
