The Lost Dream Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDEFGFGHIHIJKJK KKKKKGKG| THE black night showed its hungry teeth | A |
| And gnawed with sleet at roof and pane | B |
| Beneath the door I heard it breathe | C |
| A beast that growled in vain | B |
| The hunter wind stalked up and down | D |
| And crashed his ice spears through each tree | E |
| Before his rage in tattered gown | D |
| I saw the maid moon flee | E |
| There stole a footstep to my door | F |
| A voice cried in my room and there | G |
| A shadow cowled and gaunt and hoar | F |
| Death leaned above my chair | G |
| He beckoned me he bade me rise | H |
| And follow through the madman night | I |
| Into my heart's core pierced his eyes | H |
| And lifted me with might | I |
| I rose I made no more delay | J |
| And followed where his eyes compelled | K |
| And through the darkness far away | J |
| They lit me and enspelled | K |
| Until we reached an ancient wood | K |
| That flung its twisted arms around | K |
| As if in anguish that it stood | K |
| On dark unhallowed ground | K |
| And then I saw it cold and blind | K |
| The dream that had my heart to share | G |
| That fell before its feet could find | K |
| Its home and perished there | G |
