The Jack-o'-lantern Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABCBCDDEFEFGGHIJIII IKILIIIMIMNNOPOPIIII IIQQRIRISSTITI| Last night it was Hallowe'en | A |
| Darkest night I've ever seen | A |
| And the boy next door I thought | B |
| Would be glad to know of this | C |
| Jack o' lantern father brought | B |
| Home from Indianapolis | C |
| And he was glad Borrowed it | D |
| Put a candle in and lit | D |
| Hid among the weeds out there | E |
| In the side lot near the street | F |
| I could see it eyes aglare | E |
| Mouth and nose red slits of heat | F |
| My but it looked scary He | G |
| Perched an old hat on it see | G |
| Like some hat a scarecrow has | H |
| Battered tattered all around | I |
| And he fanned long arms of grass | J |
| Up and down above the ground | I |
| First an Irish woman shawled | I |
| With a basket saw it bawled | I |
| For her Saints and wept and cried | I |
| 'Is it you Pat Och I knew | K |
| He would git you whin you died | I |
| 'Faith there's little change in you ' | L |
| Then the candle sputtered flared | I |
| And went out and on she fared | I |
| Muttering to herself When lit | I |
| No one came for longest while | M |
| Then a man passed looked at it | I |
| On his face a knowing smile | M |
| Then it scared a colored girl | N |
| Into fits She gave a whirl | N |
| And a scream and ran and ran | O |
| Thought Old Nick had hold her skin | P |
| And she ran into a man | O |
| P'liceman and he run her in | P |
| But what pleased me most was that | I |
| It made one boy lose his hat | I |
| A big fool who thinks he's smart | I |
| Brags about the boys he beat | I |
| Knew he'd run right from the start | I |
| Biggest coward on the street | I |
| Then a crowd of girls and boys | Q |
| Gathered with a lot of noise | Q |
| When they saw the lantern well | R |
| They just took a hand they thought | I |
| That they had him when he fell | R |
| But he turned on them and fought | I |
| He just took that lantern's stick | S |
| Laid about him hard and quick | S |
| And they yelled and ran away | T |
| Then he brought me all he had | I |
| Of my lantern And I say | T |
| Could have cried I was so mad | I |
