The Iron Cross Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACBBCDBBDEBBEFBBF GBBGHBBIJBBJKBBLABBA

THEY pass with heavy eyes and hairA
Before the Christ upon the CrossB
The Nations stricken with their lossB
And lifting faces of despairA
What is the prayer they pray to HimC
Christ Jesus on the Iron CrossB
The Christ neglected dark with mossB
Whose hands are pierced whose face is grimC
Is it forgiveness for great sinD
They plead before the Iron CrossB
Or for some gift of gold or drossB
Or battle lost that they would winD
With eyes where hate and horror meetE
They pass before the Iron CrossB
The Cross that ancient words embossB
Where hangs the Christ with nail pierced feetE
His hair is fallen on his faceF
His head hangs sidewise from the CrossB
The Crucified who knows all lossB
And had on Earth no resting placeF
'O world of men ' he seems to sayG
'Behold me on your Iron CrossB
To me why kneel and tell your lossB
Why kneel to me and weep and prayG
'Have I not taught you to forgiveH
And bade you from my Iron CrossB
Believe and bear your grief and lossB
That after death you too may liveI
'You have not followed at my callJ
You keep me on this Iron CrossB
And pray me keep you from all lossB
And save and comfort you withalJ
'You ask for love and hate the moreK
You keep me on this Iron CrossB
Restore to me my greater lossB
The brotherhood of rich and poor 'L
They pass with weary eyes and hairA
Before the Christ upon the CrossB
The Nations wailing of their lossB
And lifting faces of despairA
