Where was I last Friday nightB
Within the forest of dark dreamsC
Following the blur of a goblin lightB
That led me over ugly streamsC
Whereon the scum of the spawn was spreadD
And the blistered slime in stagnant seamsC
Where the weed and the moss swam black and deadD
Like a drowned girl's hair in the ropy oozeE
And the jack o' lantern light that ledD
Flickered the fox fire trees o'erheadD
And the owl like things at airy cruiseE

Where was I last Friday nightD
Within the forest of dark dreamsC
Following a form of shadowy whiteD
With my own wild face it seemsC
Did a raven's wing just flap my hairF
Or a web winged bat brush by my faceG
Or the hand of something I did not dareF
Look round to see in that obscene placeG
Where the boughs with leaves a devil's danceH
And the thorn tree bush where the wind made moanI
Had more than a strange significanceJ
Of life and of evil not their ownI

-
Where was I last Friday nightD
Within the forest of dark dreamsC
Seeing the mists rise left and rightD
Like the leathery fog that heaves and steamsC
From the rolling horror of Hell's red streamsC
While the wind that tossed in the tattered treeK
And danced alone with the last mad leafL
Or was it the wind kept whispering meK
Now bury it here with its own black griefL
And its eyes of fire you can not braveM
And in the darkness I seemed to seeK
My own self digging my soul a graveM
