Let us mix a cup of JoyA
That the wretched may employA
Whom the Fates have made their toyA
-
Who have given brain and heartB
To the thankless world of ArtB
And from Fame have won no partB
-
Who have labored long at thoughtC
Starved and toiled and all for naughtC
Sought and found not what they soughtC
-
Let our goblet be the skullD
Of a fool made beautifulD
With a gold nor base nor dullD
-
Gold of madcap fancies onceE
It contained that sage or dunceE
Each can read whoever runsE
-
First we pour the liquid lightF
Of our dreams in then the brightF
Beauty that makes day of nightF
-
Let this be the must wherefromG
In due time the mettlesomeG
Care destroying drink shall comeG
-
Folly next with which mix inH
Laughter of a child of sinH
And the red of mouth and chinH
-
These shall give the tang theretoF
Effervescence and rich hueI
Which to all good wine are dueI
-
Then into our cup we pressE
One wild kiss of wantonnessE
And a glance that says not lessE
-
Sparkles both that give a fineJ
Lustre to the drink divineJ
Necessary to good wineJ
-
Lastly in the goblet goesE
Sweet a love song then a roseE
Warmed upon her breast's reposeE
-
These bouquet our drink Now measureK
With your arm the waist you treasureK
Lift the cup and 'Here's to Pleasure '-
