The Cup Of Comus - Proem Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABC DEDEE DFDFF GHGHH IDJDD DDDDD KLMLL NNNNN NONOO JJJJJ

The Nights of song and storyA
With breath of frost and rainB
Whose locks are wild and hoaryA
Whose fingers tap the paneB
With leaves are come againC
-
The Nights of old OctoberD
That hug the hearth and tellE
To child and grandsire soberD
Tales of what long befellE
Of witch and warlock spellE
-
Nights that like gnome and faeryD
Go lost in mist and moonF
And speak in legendaryD
Thoughts or a mystic runeF
Much like the owlet's croonF
-
Or whirling on like witchesG
Amid the brush and broomH
Call from the Earth its richesG
Of leaves and wild perfumeH
And strew them through the gloomH
-
Till death in all his starknessI
Assumes a form of fearD
And somewhere in the darknessJ
Seems slowly drawing nearD
In raiment torn and sereD
-
And with him comes NovemberD
Who drips outside the doorD
And wails what men rememberD
Of things believed no moreD
Of superstitious loreD
-
Old tales of elf and d monK
Of Kobold and of TrollL
And of the goblin womanM
Who robs man of his soulL
To make her own soul wholeL
-
And all such tales that glamouredN
The child heart once with frightN
That aged lips have stammeredN
For many a child's delightN
Shall speak again to nightN
-
To night of moonlight mintedN
That is a cup divineO
Whence Death all opal tintedN
Wreathed red with leaf and vineO
Shall drink a magic wineO
-
A wonder cup of ComusJ
That with enchantment streamsJ
In which the heart of MomusJ
That moon like glooms and gleamsJ
Is drowned with all its dreamsJ
