Out in Oldham County onceA
Met a boy who showed me howB
He could milk an old red cowB
Yes he was n't any dunceA
Put me on an old gray mareC
Rode me to an old mill whereC
They were grinding corn He filledD
A big sack and then we satE
By the dam and there he killedD
A black snake as long as thatE
-
Then he showed me how to rowF
In an old flat boat that leakedG
Where the dam was stained and streakedG
With big lilies white as snowF
Then he showed me how to swimH
Jumping from a sycamore limbH
While he splashed around why II
Waded up and down the shoreJ
Then when he was dressed and dryI
Mounted that old mare once moreJ
-
And he took the bag of mealK
'That's for corn cakes ' so he saidL
'And it makes the grandest breadL
Cornbread Ain't it heavy Feel '-
And he slung it on acrossA
That old mare who with a tossA
Of her tail turned right for homeM
On the way he showed me whereC
Hornets had their nest like someN
Foot ball made of paper thereC
-
And he showed me how to catchO
Bumblebees and how to keepP
Them from stinging made a leapP
Caught one in a clover patchO
And he showed me then where theyQ
Stow their honey bags awayQ
Caught two bees and was n't stungR
Took one's bag and gave it meS
And I put it on my tongueR
Sweet yes sir and smelt of beeS
-
Then he caught a locust tookT
Its two wings like some queer toy'sA
Showed me how it made its noiseA
Held it up and shook and shookT
Till it rattled And that nightU
Showed me with a lantern lightU
How the pond toads puffed their throatsA
Each one like a toy balloonV
Swelling piping reedy notesA
Making music for the moonV
-
No he was n't any dunceA
No sir Why he'd tell the timeW
By the sun he could And climbW
Climbed a great tall poplar onceA
Hundred feet or more and straightX
As the flag pole at our gateX
When he's up there took his hatE
Tossed it up and cried 'Hurrah '-
Bet you no man could do thatE
No not even my own PaY
-
Lose him Why he'd tell his wayQ
In the darkest night he couldZ
In the deepest darkest woodZ
By the stars he said by dayQ
Knew it by these lichens onA2
Trunks of trees When I am grownB2
He's a going to teach me allC2
Everything he knows and I'mW
Going there again this FallC2
Live there may be all the timeW
