When to that house I came which long agoA
My heart had builded of its joy and woeA
Upon its threshold lo I paused againB
Dreading to enter fearing to beholdC
The place wherein my Love had lived of oldC
And where my other self lay dead and slainD
-
I feared to see some shape some Hope once dearE
Behind the arras dead some face of FearE
With eyes accusing that would sear my soulF
Taking away my manhood and my strengthG
With heartbreak memories And yet at lengthG
Again I stood within that house of doleF
-
Sombre and beautiful with stately thingsH
The long hall lay and by the stairs the wingsH
Of Life and Love rose marble and unmarredC
And all the walls hung grave with tapestryI
Gesticulated sorrow gazed at meI
Strange speculation in their dark regardC
-
Through one tall oriel the close of dayC
Glared with its crimson face and laid a rayC
A burning finger on the stairway whereJ
A trail of tears as of a wounded heartC
Led to a passage with a room apartC
A room where Love had perished of despairJ
-
Now all was empty silent even of sighsK
And yet I felt within that room were eyesK
Unearthly eyes I dared not look uponL
That had seen God within them hell and heavenM
Of all the past I dared not look yet evenN
As I drew back my feet were slowly drawnO
-
Into that room lit with those eyes I sawP
An Angel standing with the Book of LawP
His raiment lightening from head to feetC
And swords of flame and darkness in his eyesK
He stood the great Book open as the skiesK
Like some great heart throbbing with rosy heatC
-
One moment blazed the vision then I heardC
Not with my ears but with my soul this wordC
I am the Law through which Love is Each oneM
Through me must win unto his heaven or hellQ
I build the house in which all memories dwellQ
Thy house is finished and my task is doneM
-
And where the vision burned was nothing FearE
Bowed me to earth for flaming very nearE
I felt that Angel's presence like a spellQ
That turned my eyesight inward where I sawP
That this was Love whose other name is LawP
By whom was built my House of Heaven and HellQ
