The Angel With The Book Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABCCD EEFGGF HHCIIC CCJCCJ KKLMNO PPCKKC CCMQQM EEQPPQWhen to that house I came which long ago | A |
My heart had builded of its joy and woe | A |
Upon its threshold lo I paused again | B |
Dreading to enter fearing to behold | C |
The place wherein my Love had lived of old | C |
And where my other self lay dead and slain | D |
- | |
I feared to see some shape some Hope once dear | E |
Behind the arras dead some face of Fear | E |
With eyes accusing that would sear my soul | F |
Taking away my manhood and my strength | G |
With heartbreak memories And yet at length | G |
Again I stood within that house of dole | F |
- | |
Sombre and beautiful with stately things | H |
The long hall lay and by the stairs the wings | H |
Of Life and Love rose marble and unmarred | C |
And all the walls hung grave with tapestry | I |
Gesticulated sorrow gazed at me | I |
Strange speculation in their dark regard | C |
- | |
Through one tall oriel the close of day | C |
Glared with its crimson face and laid a ray | C |
A burning finger on the stairway where | J |
A trail of tears as of a wounded heart | C |
Led to a passage with a room apart | C |
A room where Love had perished of despair | J |
- | |
Now all was empty silent even of sighs | K |
And yet I felt within that room were eyes | K |
Unearthly eyes I dared not look upon | L |
That had seen God within them hell and heaven | M |
Of all the past I dared not look yet even | N |
As I drew back my feet were slowly drawn | O |
- | |
Into that room lit with those eyes I saw | P |
An Angel standing with the Book of Law | P |
His raiment lightening from head to feet | C |
And swords of flame and darkness in his eyes | K |
He stood the great Book open as the skies | K |
Like some great heart throbbing with rosy heat | C |
- | |
One moment blazed the vision then I heard | C |
Not with my ears but with my soul this word | C |
I am the Law through which Love is Each one | M |
Through me must win unto his heaven or hell | Q |
I build the house in which all memories dwell | Q |
Thy house is finished and my task is done | M |
- | |
And where the vision burned was nothing Fear | E |
Bowed me to earth for flaming very near | E |
I felt that Angel's presence like a spell | Q |
That turned my eyesight inward where I saw | P |
That this was Love whose other name is Law | P |
By whom was built my House of Heaven and Hell | Q |
