Standing-stone Creek Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCD EFEFGG HIHIJJ KLKLMM NONOEE PQPQRS

A weed grown slope whereon the rainA
Has washed the brown rocks bareB
Leads tangled from a lonely laneA
Down to a creek's broad stairB
Of stone that through the solitudeC
Winds onward to a quiet woodD
-
An intermittent roof of shadeE
The beech above it throwsF
Along its steps a balustradeE
Of beauty builds the roseF
In which a stately lamp of greenG
At intervals the cedar's seenG
-
The water carpeting each ledgeH
Of rock that runs acrossI
Glints 'twixt a flow'r embroidered edgeH
Of ferns and grass and mossI
And in its deeps the wood and skyJ
Seem patterns of the softest dyeJ
-
Long corridors of pleasant duskK
Within the house of leavesL
It reaches where on looms of muskK
The ceaseless locust weavesL
A web of summer and perfumeM
Trails a sweet gown from room to roomM
-
Green windows of the boughs that swingN
It passes where the notesO
Of birds are glad thoughts enteringN
And butterflies are motesO
And now a vista where the dayE
Opens a door of wind and rayE
-
It is a stairway for all soundsP
That haunt the woodland sidesQ
On which boy like the southwind boundsP
Girl like the sunbeam glidesQ
And like fond parents following theseR
The oldtime dreams of rest and peaceS
