Sleep Is A Spirit Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDE FFGGHH AAIIAA JJAAK LLAAM MEENN

Sleep is a spirit who beside us sitsA
Or through our frames like some dim glamour flitsA
From out her form a pearly light is shedB
As from a lily in a lily bedB
A firefly's gleam Her face is pale as stoneC
And languid as a cloud that drifts aloneC
In starry heav'n And her diaphanous feetD
Are easy as the dew or opaline heatD
Of summerE
-
Lo with ears aurora pinkF
As Dawn's she leans and listens on the brinkF
Of being dark with dreadfulness and doubtG
Wherein vague lights and shadows move aboutG
And palpitations beat like some huge heartH
Of Earth the surging pulse of which we're partH
-
One hand that hollows her divining eyesA
Glows like the curved moon over twilight skiesA
And with her gaze she fathoms life and deathI
Gulfs where man's conscience like a restless breathI
Of wind goes wand'ring whispering low of thingsA
The irremediable where sorrow clingsA
-
Around her limbs a veil of woven mistJ
Wavers and turns from fibered amethystJ
To textured crystal through which symboled barsA
Of silver burn and cabalistic starsA
Of nebulous goldK
-
Shrouding her feet and hairL
Within this woof fantastic everywhereL
Dreams come and go the instant imagesA
Of things she sees and thinks realitiesA
Shadows with which her heart and fancy swarmM
-
That in the veil take momentary formM
Now picturing heaven in celestial fireE
And now the hell of every soul's desireE
Hinting at worlds God wraps in mysteryN
Beyond the world we know and touch and seeN
