And I rose from my sleep and went | B |
Out in the night to weep | A |
Over the bristling bent | B |
With my soul it seemed I stood | C |
Alone in a moaning wood | C |
- | |
And my soul said gazing at me | D |
Shall I show you another land | E |
Than other this flesh can see | D |
And took into hers my hand | E |
We passed from the wood to a heath | F |
As starved as the ribs of Death | G |
- | |
Three skeleton trees we pass | H |
Bare bones on an iron moor | I |
Where every leaf and the grass | H |
Was a thorn and a thistle hoar | J |
And my soul said looking on me | D |
The past of your life you see | D |
- | |
And a swine herd passed with his swine | K |
Deformed and I heard him growl | L |
Two eyes of a sottish shine | K |
Leered under two brows as foul | L |
And my soul said This is the lust | M |
That soils my limbs with the dust | M |
- | |
And a goose wife hobbled by | N |
On a crutch with the devil's geese | O |
A mumbling how life is a lie | N |
And cursing my soul without cease | O |
And my soul said This is desire | P |
The meaning of life is higher | P |
- | |
And we came to a garden close | Q |
To a hollow of graves and tombs | R |
A garden as red as a rose | S |
Hung over of obscene glooms | S |
The heart of each rose was a spark | T |
That smouldered or splintered the dark | T |
- | |
And I was aware of a girl | U |
With a wild rose face who came | V |
With a mouth like a shell's split pearl | U |
Rose clad in a robe of flame | V |
And she plucked the roses and gave | W |
And my flesh was her veriest slave | W |
- | |
She vanished My lips would have kissed | X |
The flowers she gave me with sighs | S |
But they writhed in my hands and hissed | X |
In their hearts were a serpent's eyes | S |
And my soul said Pleasure is she | D |
The joys of the flesh you see | D |
- | |
And I bowed with a heart too weary | D |
That longed for rest for sleep | A |
And my eyes were heavy and teary | D |
And yearned for a way to weep | A |
And my soul smiled This may be | D |
Will you know me and follow me | D |
