See how the rose leaves fallA
The rose leaves fall and fadeB
And by the wall in dusk funerealA
How leaf on leaf is laidB
Withered and soiled and frayedB
-
How red the rose leaves fallA
And in the ancient treesC
That stretch their twisted arms about the hallA
Burdened with mysteriesC
How sadly sighs the breezeC
-
How soft the rose leaves fallA
The rose leaves drift and lieA
And over them dull slugs and beetles crawlA
And palely glimmering byA
The glow worm trails its eyeA
-
How thick the rose leaves fallA
And strew the garden wayD
For snails to slime and spotted toads to sprawlA
And plodding past each dayD
Coarse feet to tread in clayD
-
How fast they fall and fallA
Where Beauty carved in stoneE
With broken hands veils her dead eyes and tallA
White in the moonlight loneE
Looms like a marble moanE
-
How slow they drift and fallA
And strew the fountained poolA
That in the nymph carved basin by the wallA
Reflects in darkness coolA
Ruin made beautifulA
-
How red the rose leaves fallA
Fall and like blood remainF
Upon the dial's disc whose pedestalA
Black mossed and dark with stainF
Crumbles in sun and rainF
-
How wan they seem to fallA
Around one where she standsG
Dim in their midst beyond the years' recallA
Reaching pale passionate handsG
Into the past's vague landsG
-
How still they fall and fallA
Around them where they meetH
As oft of old she in her gem pinned shawlA
Of white and he completeH
In black from head to feetH
-
How faint the rose leaves fallA
Around them where it seemsI
He holds her clasped parting from her and allA
His heart's young hopes and dreamsI
There in the moon's thin beamsI
-
Around them rose leaves fallA
And in the stress and urgeJ
Of winds that strew them lightly over allA
With deep autumnal surgeJ
There seems to rise a dirgeJ
-
'See how the rose leaves fallA
Upon thy dead O soulA
The rose leaves of the love that once in thrallA
Held thee beyond controlA
Making thy heart's world wholeA
-
'God help them still to fallA
Around thee bowed aboveK
The face within thy heart beneath the pallA
The perished face thereofK
The beautiful face of Love '-
