MasksA
-
Death rides black masked to night and through the landB
Madness beside him brandishes a torchC
The peaceful farmhouse with its vine wreathed porchC
Lies in their way Death lifts a bony handB
And knocks and Madness makes a wild demandB
Of fierce Defiance then the night's deep archD
Reverberates and under beech and latchE
A dead face stares shot where one took his standB
Then down the night wild hoofs the darkness beatsF
And like a torrent through the startled townG
Destruction sweeps high overhead a flameH
And Violence that shoots amid the streetsF
A piercing whistle one who gallops downG
And Death and Madness go the way they cameH

The RaidJ
-
Rain and black night Beneath the covered bridgeK
The rushing Fork that roars among its rocksL
Nothing is out Nothing What's that which blocksL
The long grey road upon the rain swept ridgeK
A horseman No A mask As hewn from jetM
With ready gun he waits and sentinelsN
The open way Far off he hears wild bellsO
And now a signal shrills through wind and wetM
Was that the thunder or the rushing streamP
The tunnel of the bridge throbs with mad hoofsQ
Now its black throat pours out a midnight cloudR
Riders behind whom steadily a gleamP
Grows to a glare that silhouettes dark roofsS
Whence armed Pursuit gathers and gallops loudR

The RendezvousT
-
A lonely barn lost in a field of weedsU
A fallen fence where partly hangs a gateV
The skies are darkening and the hour is lateV
The Indian dusk comes red in rainy beadsU
Along a path which from a woodland leadsU
Horsemen come riding who dismount and waitV
Here Anarchy conspires with Crime and HateV
And Madness masks and on its business speedsU
Another Kuklux in another warW
Of blacker outrage down the night they rideX
Brandishing a torch and gun before each farmY
Is Law asleep then Does she fear Where areZ
The servants of her strength the Commonweath's prideX
And where the steel of her restraining armY

In Black And RedB2
-
The hush of death is on the night The cornC2
That loves to whisper to the wind the leavesD2
That dance with it are silent one perceivesD2
No motion mid the fields as dry as hornC2
What light is that It cannot be the mornC2
Yet in the east it seems its witchcraft weavesD2
A fiery rose Look how it grows it heavesD2
And flames and tosses 'Tis a burning barnE2
And now the night is rent with shouts and shotsF2
Dark forms and faces hurry past The gloomG2
Gallops with riders Homes are less than strawH2
Before this madness human lives mere lotsF2
Flung in and juggled from the cap of DoomG2
Where Crime stamps yelling on the face of LawH2
