Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DCDC EFEF GHGH FCFC FIFI

The locust builds its are of soundA
And tops it with a spireB
The roadside leaves pant to the groundA
With dust from hoof and tireC
-
The insects day and night make dinD
And with the heat grow shrillerC
And everywhere great spiders spinD
And crawls the caterpillarC
-
The wells are dry the creeks are poolsE
Weeds cram their beds with bristlesF
And when a wind breathes naught it coolsE
The air grows white with thistlesF
-
For months the drouth has burned and bakedG
The wood and field and gardenH
The flower plots are dead and rakedG
Or mown the meadows hardenH
-
The Summer sunk in godlessnessF
From quarter unto quarterC
Now drags now lifts a dusty dressF
That shows a sloven garterC
-
The child of Spring it now appearsF
Has turned a drab a harlotI
Death's doxy Death's who near her leersF
In rags of gold and scarletI
