Rain In The Woods Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABA CDCDC EFEFE GHGHG IJIJI KLKLK MNMNM OLPLP QRQRQ SLSLS

When on the leaves the rain persistsA
And every gust brings showers downB
When all the woodland smokes with mistsA
I take the old road out of townB
Into the hills through which it twistsA

I find the vale where catnip growsC
Where boneset blooms with moisture bowedD
The vale through which the red creek flowsC
Turbid with hill washed clay and loudD
As some wild horn a hunter blowsC
-
Around the root the beetle glidesE
A living beryl and the antF
Large agate red a garnet slidesE
Beneath the rock and every plantF
Is roof for some frail thing that hidesE

Like knots against the trunks of treesG
The lichen colored moths are pressedH
And wedged in hollow blooms the beesG
Seem clots of pollen in its nestH
The wasp has crawled and lies at easeG
-
The locust harsh that sharply sawsI
The silence of the summer noonJ
The katydid that thinly drawsI
Its fine file o'er the bars of moonJ
And grasshopper that drills each pauseI

The mantis long clawed furtive leanK
Fierce feline of the insect hordesL
And dragonfly gauze winged and greenK
Beneath the wild grape's leaves and gourd'sL
Have housed themselves and rest unseenK
-
The butterfly and forest birdM
Are huddled on the same gnarled boughN
From which like some rain voweled wordM
That dampness hoarsely utters nowN
The tree toad's voice is vaguely heardM
-
I crouch and listen and againO
The woods are filled with phantom formsL
With shapes grotesque in mystic trainP
That rise and reach to me cool armsL
Of mist the wandering wraiths of rainP

I see them come fantastic fairQ
Chill mushroom colored sky and earthR
Grow ghostly with their floating hairQ
And trailing limbs that have their birthR
In wetness fungi of the airQ
-
O wraiths of rain O ghosts of mistS
Still fold me hold me and pursueL
Still let my lips by yours be kissedS
Still draw me with your hands of dewL
Unto the tryst the dripping trystS
