Nearing Christmas Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBABCCDDCDEEFFEFGG HHGHIIJJIKLMNOMOGPQQ PQ

THE season of the rose and peace is pastA
It could not lastA
There's heartbreak in the hills and stormy sighsB
Of sorrow in the rain lashed plains and skiesB
While Earth regards aghastA
The last red leaf that fliesB
The world is cringing in the darkness whereC
War left his lairC
And everything takes on a lupine lookD
Baring gaunt teeth at every peaceful nookD
And shaking torrent hairC
At every little brookD
Cancers of ulcerous flame his eyes and harkE
There in the darkE
The ponderous stir of metal iron feetF
And with it heard around the world the beatF
Of Battle sounds that markE
His heart's advance retreatF
With shrapnel pipes he goes his monstrous waysG
And screeching playsG
The hell born music Havoc dances toH
And following with his skeleton headed crewH
Of ravening Nights and DaysG
Horror invades the blueH
Against the Heaven he lifts a mailed fistI
And writes a listI
Of beautiful cities on the ghastly skyJ
And underneath them with no reason whyJ
In blood and tears and mistI
The postscript 'These must die 'K
Change is the portion and chief heritageL
Of every AgeM
The spirit of God still waits its time And WarN
May blur His message for a while and marO
The writing on His pageM
To this our sorrowful starO
But there above the conflict orbed in raysG
Is drawn the faceP
Of Peace at last who comes into her ownQ
Peace from whose tomb the world shall roll the stoneQ
And give her highest placeP
In the human heart aloneQ
