Musagetes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABAB CDCECD FGFGFG HIHIHI GGGGGG HJHJHJ GAGAGA

For the mountains' hoarse greetings came hollowA
From stormy wind chasms and cavesB
And I heard their wild cataracts wallowA
Huge bulks in long spasms of wavesB
And that Demon said Lo you must followA
And our path is o'er myriads of gravesB
-
Then I felt that the black earth was porousC
And rotten with worms and with bonesD
And I knew that the ground that now bore usC
Was cadaverous with Death's skeletonsE
And I saw horrid eyes heard sonorousC
And dolorous gnashings and groansD
-
But the night of the tempest and thunderF
The might of the terrible skiesG
And the fire of Hell that coiled underF
The hollow Earth smoulders and sighsG
And the laughter of stars and their wonderF
Mingled and mixed in its eyesG
-
And we clomb and the moon old and sterileH
Clomb with us o'er torrent and scarI
And I yearned towards her oceans of berylH
Wan mountains and cities of sparI
'Tis not well that one said you're in perilH
Of falling and failing your starI
-
And we clomb through a murmur of pinionsG
Thin rattle of talons and plumesG
And a sense as of Boreal dominionsG
Clove down to the abysms and tombsG
And the Night's naked Ethiope minionsG
Swarmed on us in legions of gloomsG
-
And we clomb till we stood at the portalH
Of the uttermost point of the peakJ
And it led with a step more than mortalH
Far upward some presence to seekJ
And I felt that this love was immortalH
This love which had made me so weakJ
-
We had clomb till the limbo of spiritsG
Of darkness and crime deep belowA
Swung nebular nor could we hear itsG
Lost wailings and moanings of woeA
For we stood in a realm that inheritsG
A vanquishing virgin of snowA
