THE moon a circle of gold	A
O'er the crowded housetops rolled	A
And peeped in an attic where	B
'Mid sordid things and bare	B
A sick child lay and gazed	C
At a road to the far away	D
A road he followed mazed	C
That grew from a moonbeam ray	D
A road of light that led	C
From the foot of his garret bed	C
Out of that room of hate	C
Where Poverty slept by his mate	C
Sickness out of the street	C
Into a wonderland	C
Where a voice called far and sweet	C
'Come follow our Fairy band '	E
A purple shadow sprinkled	C
With golden star dust twinkled	C
Suddenly into the room	F
Out of the winter gloom	F
And it wore a face to him	G
Of a dream he'd dreamed a form	H
Of Joy whose face was dim	G
Yet bright with a magic charm	I
And the shadow seemed to trail	J
Sounds that were green and frail	J
Dew dripples notes that fell	K
Like drops in a ferny dell	K
A whispered lisp and stir	L
Like winds among the leaves	M
Blent with a cricket chirr	L
And coo of a dove that grieves	M
And the Elfin bore on its back	N
A little faery pack	N
Of forest scents of loam	O
And mossy sounds of foam	O
And of its contents breathed	C
As might a clod of ground	C
Feeling a bud unsheathed	C
There in its womb profound	C
And the shadow smiled and gazed	C
At the child then softly raised	C
Its arms and seemed to grow	L
To a tree in the attic low	L
And from its glimmering hands	P
Shook emerald seeds of dreams	Q
From which grew fairy bands	P
Like firefly motes and gleams	Q
The child had seen them before	L
In his dreams of Fairy lore	L
The Elves each with a light	C
To guide his feet a right	C
Out of this world to a world	C
Where Magic built him towers	R
And Fable old unfurled	C
Flags like wonderful flowers	R
And the child who knew this smiled	C
And rose a different child	C
No more he knew of pain	S
Or fear of heart and brain	S
At Poverty there that slept	C
He never even glanced	C
But into the moon road stept	C
And out of the garret danced	C
Out of the earthly gloom	F
Out of the sordid room	F
Out on a moonbeam ray	L
Now at last to play	L
There with comrades found	C
Children of the moon	T
There on faery ground	C
Where none would find him soon	T
