THE moon a circle of goldA
O'er the crowded housetops rolledA
And peeped in an attic whereB
'Mid sordid things and bareB
A sick child lay and gazedC
At a road to the far awayD
A road he followed mazedC
That grew from a moonbeam rayD
A road of light that ledC
From the foot of his garret bedC
Out of that room of hateC
Where Poverty slept by his mateC
Sickness out of the streetC
Into a wonderlandC
Where a voice called far and sweetC
'Come follow our Fairy band 'E
A purple shadow sprinkledC
With golden star dust twinkledC
Suddenly into the roomF
Out of the winter gloomF
And it wore a face to himG
Of a dream he'd dreamed a formH
Of Joy whose face was dimG
Yet bright with a magic charmI
And the shadow seemed to trailJ
Sounds that were green and frailJ
Dew dripples notes that fellK
Like drops in a ferny dellK
A whispered lisp and stirL
Like winds among the leavesM
Blent with a cricket chirrL
And coo of a dove that grievesM
And the Elfin bore on its backN
A little faery packN
Of forest scents of loamO
And mossy sounds of foamO
And of its contents breathedC
As might a clod of groundC
Feeling a bud unsheathedC
There in its womb profoundC
And the shadow smiled and gazedC
At the child then softly raisedC
Its arms and seemed to growL
To a tree in the attic lowL
And from its glimmering handsP
Shook emerald seeds of dreamsQ
From which grew fairy bandsP
Like firefly motes and gleamsQ
The child had seen them beforeL
In his dreams of Fairy loreL
The Elves each with a lightC
To guide his feet a rightC
Out of this world to a worldC
Where Magic built him towersR
And Fable old unfurledC
Flags like wonderful flowersR
And the child who knew this smiledC
And rose a different childC
No more he knew of painS
Or fear of heart and brainS
At Poverty there that sleptC
He never even glancedC
But into the moon road steptC
And out of the garret dancedC
Out of the earthly gloomF
Out of the sordid roomF
Out on a moonbeam rayL
Now at last to playL
There with comrades foundC
Children of the moonT
There on faery groundC
Where none would find him soonT
