The last rose falls wrecked of the wind and rainB
Where once it bloomed the thorns alone remainB
Dead in the wet the slow rain strews the roseC
The day was dim now eve comes on againD
Grave as a life weighed down by many woesC
So is the joy dead and alive the painB
-
The brown leaf flutters where the green leaf diedE
Bare are the boughs and bleak the forest sideE
The wind is whirling with the last wild leafF
The eve was strange now dusk comes weird and wideE
Gaunt as a life that lives alone with griefF
So doth the hope go and despair abideE
-
An empty nest hangs where the wood bird pledG
Along the west the dusk dies stormy redG
The frost is subtle as a serpent's breathH
The dusk was sad now night is overheadG
Grim as a soul brought face to face with deathH
So life lives on when love its life lies deadG

-
Go your own ways Who shall persuade me nowI
To seek with high face for a star of hopeJ
Or up endeavor's unsubmissive slopeJ
Advance a bosom of desire and bowI
A back of patience in a thankless taskK
Alone beside the grave of love I askK
Shalt thou or thouI
-
Leave go my hands Fain would I walk aloneL
The easy ways of silence and of sleepM
What though I go with eyes that cannot weepM
And lips contracted with no uttered moanL
Through rocks and thorns where every footprint bleedsN
A dead sea path of desert night that leadsN
To one white stoneL
-
Though sands be black and bitter black the seaO
Night lie before me and behind me nightP
And God within far Heaven refuse to lightP
The consolation of the dawn for meO
Between the shadowy bournes of Heaven and HellQ
It is enough love leaves my soul to dwellQ
With memoryO
