I CAME upon a pool that shoneA
Clear emerald like among the hillsB
That seemed old wizards round a stoneA
Of magic that a vision thrillsB
And as I leaned and looked it seemedC
Vague shadows gathered there and hereD
A dream perhaps the water dreamedC
Of some wild past some long dead yearE
A temple of a race unblessedC
Rose huge within a hollow landC
Where on an altar bare of breastC
One lay a man bound foot and handC
A priest who served some hideous godC
Stood near him on the altar stairF
Clothed on with gold and at his nodC
A multitude seemed gathered thereF
I saw a sword descend and thenG
The priest before the altar turnedC
He was not formed like mortal manH
But like a beast whose eyeballs burnedC
Amorphous strangely old he glaredC
Above the victim he had slainI
Who lay with bleeding bosom baredC
From which dripped slow a crimson rainI
Then turned to me a face of stoneA
And mocked above the murdered deadC
That fixed its cold eyes on his ownA
And cursed him with a look of dreadC
And then it seemed I knew the placeJ
And how this sacrifice befellK
I knew the god the priest's wild faceJ
I knew the dead man knew him wellK
And as I stooped again to lookL
I heard the dark hills sigh and laughM
And in the pool the water shookL
As if one stirred it with a staffM
And all was still again and clearE
The pool lay crystal as beforeN
Temple and priest were gone the mereE
Had closed again its magic doorN
A face was there it seemed to shineO
As round it died the sunset's flameP
The victim's face or was it mineO
They were to me the very sameP
And yet and yet could this thing beQ
And in my soul I seemed to knowR
At once this was a memoryQ
Of some past life lived long agoR
Recorded by some secret senseS
In forms that we as dreams retainI
Some moment as experienceT
Projects in pictures on the brainI
