I CAME upon a pool that shone	A
Clear emerald like among the hills	B
That seemed old wizards round a stone	A
Of magic that a vision thrills	B
And as I leaned and looked it seemed	C
Vague shadows gathered there and here	D
A dream perhaps the water dreamed	C
Of some wild past some long dead year	E
A temple of a race unblessed	C
Rose huge within a hollow land	C
Where on an altar bare of breast	C
One lay a man bound foot and hand	C
A priest who served some hideous god	C
Stood near him on the altar stair	F
Clothed on with gold and at his nod	C
A multitude seemed gathered there	F
I saw a sword descend and then	G
The priest before the altar turned	C
He was not formed like mortal man	H
But like a beast whose eyeballs burned	C
Amorphous strangely old he glared	C
Above the victim he had slain	I
Who lay with bleeding bosom bared	C
From which dripped slow a crimson rain	I
Then turned to me a face of stone	A
And mocked above the murdered dead	C
That fixed its cold eyes on his own	A
And cursed him with a look of dread	C
And then it seemed I knew the place	J
And how this sacrifice befell	K
I knew the god the priest's wild face	J
I knew the dead man knew him well	K
And as I stooped again to look	L
I heard the dark hills sigh and laugh	M
And in the pool the water shook	L
As if one stirred it with a staff	M
And all was still again and clear	E
The pool lay crystal as before	N
Temple and priest were gone the mere	E
Had closed again its magic door	N
A face was there it seemed to shine	O
As round it died the sunset's flame	P
The victim's face or was it mine	O
They were to me the very same	P
And yet and yet could this thing be	Q
And in my soul I seemed to know	R
At once this was a memory	Q
Of some past life lived long ago	R
Recorded by some secret sense	S
In forms that we as dreams retain	I
Some moment as experience	T
Projects in pictures on the brain	I
