Yea there are some who always seekA
The love that lasts an hourB
And some who in love's language speakA
Yet never know his powerB
-
Of such was I who knew not whatC
Sweet mysteries may riseD
Within the heart when 't is its lotE
To love and realizeD
-
Of such was I ah me till loF
Your face on mine did gleamG
And changed that world I used to knowF
Into an evil dreamG
-
That world wherein on hill and plainH
Great blood red poppies bloomedI
Their hot hearts thirsty for the rainH
And sleepily perfumedI
-
Above below on every partJ
A crimson shadow layK
As if the red sun streamed athwartL
And sunset was alwayM
-
I know not how I know not whenN
I only know that thereO
She met me in the haunted glenN
A poppy in her hairO
-
Her face seemed fair as Mary's isP
That knows no sin or wrongQ
Her presence filled the silencesP
As music fills a songQ
-
And she was clad like the Mother of GodR
As 't were for Christ's sweet sakeS
But when she moved and where she trodR
A hiss went of a snakeS
-
Though seeming sinless till I dieT
I shall not know for sureU
Why to my soul she seemed a lieT
And otherwise than pureU
-
Nor why I kissed her soon and lateV
And for her felt desireB
While loathing of her passion ateV
Into my soul like fireB
-
Was it because my soul could tellW
That like the poppy flowerB
She had no soul a thing of HellW
That o'er it had no powerB
-
Or was it that your love at lastX
My soul so long had cravedY
From the sweet sin that held me fastX
At that last moment savedY
