Rhyme Scheme: AAA BBB CDC EEF GGG HHH IJJ KKK LFF FFF FFF FFF

There are some soulsA
Whose lot it is to set their hearts on goalsA
That adverse Fate controlsA
-
While others winB
With little labor through life's dust and dinB
And lord like enter inB
-
Immortal gatesC
And of Success the high born intimatesD
Inherit Fame's estatesC
-
Why is't the lotE
Of merit oft to struggle and yet notE
Attain to toil for whatF
-
Simply to knowG
The disappointment the despair and woeG
Of effort here belowG
-
Ambitious still to reachH
Those lofty peaks which men aspiring preachH
For which their souls beseechH
-
Those heights that swellI
Remote removed and unattainableJ
Pinnacle on pinnacleJ
-
Still yearning to attainK
Their far repose above life's stress and strainK
But all in vain in vainK
-
Why hath God putL
Great longings in some souls and straightway shutF
All doors of their clay hutF
-
The clay accurstF
That holds achievement back from which immersedF
The spirit may not burstF
-
Were it at leastF
Not better to have sat at Circe's feastF
If afterwards a beastF
-
Than aye to bleedF
To strain and strive to toil in thought and deedF
And nevermore succeedF
