Dead and all the haughty fateA
Fair on throat and face of waxB
White calm hands crossed still and laxB
Cold impassionateA
-
Dead and no word whispered lowC
At the dull ear now could wakeD
One responsive chord or makeD
One wan temple glowC
-
Dead and no hot tear would stirE
All that woman sweet and fairF
Woman soul from feet to hairF
Which was once of herE
-
God and thus to die and IG
I must live though life be butA
One long hard monotonous rutA
There to plod and dieG
-
Creeds are well in such a caseH
But no sermon could have wroughtA
More of faith than you have taughtA
With your pale dead faceH
-
And I see it as you seeI
One mistake so very smallJ
Yet so great it mangled allJ
Left you this and meI
-
Oft I pondered saying SureK
She could never live such lifeL
And the truth stabbed like a knifeL
When I found you pureK
-
Pure so pure and me bemoiledA
Loathly as loathed vermin justA
As weak souls are left of lustA
Loveless low and soiledA
-
Nay I loved you then and loveM
Grand great eyes I see them yetA
Set like luminous gems of jetA
In wax lids aboveM
-
Lips O poor dumb chideless lipsN
Once as red as life could makeD
Moist as wan wild roses wakeD
When the wild dew dripsN
-
Hair imperial full and warmO
As a Grace's where one stoneP
Precious lay ensnared and shoneP
Like a star in stormO
-
Eyes at parting big with painQ
God I see them and the tearF
In them big as eyes of deerR
Led by lights and slainQ
-
Life so true I falsely cursedA
Lips that curled with scorn and prideA
Hurt me though I said they liedA
While the true heart burstA
-
Rest my heart has suffered tooA
And this life had woe enoughS
For the little dole of loveM
Given to me and youA
-
Can you hear me can you knowC
What I am and how it cameT
You beyond me like a flameT
You before me like the snowC
-
Dead and all my heart a cupU
Hollowed for sad bitter tearsV
Bitter in the bitter yearsW
Slowly brimming upU
-
Sleep 'tis well but might have beenX
Better yes God knows it mightA
Better for me in His sightA
And my soul more cleanY
-
Sleep in very peace but IG
With Earth's other fools will stayA
Live 'mid laughter day by dayA
Mocking laugh and dieG
-
You will know me now I knowC
But in life had never knownP
How indeed I was aloneP
But 'tis better soC
-
And I know you what you wereE
Faithful and it were no useZ
Only to yourself abuseZ
I shall tell you thereF
-
There beyond the lightning andA
The long clouds and utter skiesA2
Moons and suns and stars that riseA2
Where we'll understandA
