IA
-
My soul goes out to her who saysB
'Come follow me and cast off care '-
Then tosses back her sun bright hairC
And like a flower before me swaysD
Between the green leaves and my gazeD
This creature like a girl who smilesE
Into my eyes and softly laysD
Her hand in mine and leads me milesE
Long miles of haunted forest waysD
-
IIA
-
Sometimes she seems a faint perfumeF
A fragrance that a flower exhaledG
And God gave form to now unveiledG
A sunbeam making gold the gloomF
Of vines that roof some woodland roomF
Of boughs and now the silvery soundH
Of streams her presence doth assumeF
Music from which in dreaming drownedH
A crystal shape she seems to bloomF
-
IIIA
-
Sometimes she seems the light that liesI
On foam of waters where the fernJ
Shimmers and drips now at some turnJ
Of woodland bright against the skiesI
She seems the rainbowed mist that fliesI
And now the mossy fire that breaksK
Beneath the feet in azure eyesI
Of flowers now the wind that shakesK
Pale petals from the bough that sighsI
-
IV-
-
Sometimes she lures me with a songL
Sometimes she guides me with a laugh-
Her white hand is a magic staff-
Her look a spell to lead me longL
Though she be weak and I be strongL
She needs but shake her happy hairC
But glance her eyes and right or wrongL
My soul must follow anywhereC
She wills far from the world's loud throngL
-
V-
-
Sometimes I think that she must be-
No part of earth but merely thisM
The fair elusive thing we missM
In Nature that we dream we see-
Yet never see that goldenlyN
Beckons that limbed with rose and pearlN
The Greek made a divinity-
A nymph a god a glimmering girlN
That haunts the forest's mystery-
