O Dionysos Dionysos the ivy crownedA
O let me sing thy triumph ere I dieB
-
Within my sleep a Maenad came to meC
A harp of crimson agate strung with goldD
Wailed 'neath her waxen fingers and her heartE
'Neath the white gauze thro' which a moonlight shoneF
Kept time with its wild throbbings to her songG
-
Aegeus sleeps O Dionysos sleepsH
Pale 'neath the tumbling waves that sing his nameI
Eternally at my dew glist'ning feetJ
And so he died O Dionysos diedK
O let me sing thy triumph ere I dieB
-
With the shrill syrinx and the kissing clangL
Of silver cymbals clashed by Ethiopes swartM
O pard drawn youth thou didst awake the worldN
To joy and pleasure with thy sunny wineO
Mad'st India bow and the dun flooding NileP
Grow purple in the radiance of the wineO
Cast from the richness of Silenus' cupQ
Whiles yet the heavens of heat saw dances wildR
Whirl mid the redness of the Libic sandsS
Which greedy drank the Bacchanalian draughtT
Spun from the giddy bowl a rose tinged mistU
O'er the slant edge red twinkling in the eyeB
Of brazen Ra fierce turning overheadV
What made gold Horus smile with golden lipsW
Anubis dire forget his ghosts to leadV
To Hell's profoundness and then stay to sipX
One winking bubble from the wine god's cupQ
What made Osiris 'mid the palms of NileP
Leave Isis dreaming and the frolic Pan'sY
Harsh trebles follow as a roaring bullZ
Far as the gleaming temples of IndraA2
And mourned in Memphis by his tawny priestsB2
It was thy joys sun nourished fire of wineO
The brimming purple of the hollow goldD
They tasted and they worshiped gods themselvesC2
-
Wan Echo sat once in a spiral shellD2
She from its sea dyed maziness of pearlE2
Saw the mixed pageant dancing on the strandF2
Where Nereus slept upon an isle of cragsC2
And o'er the slope of his far foaming headV
The strangeness of the orgies wildly criedK
Till the frore god shook many a billow curlE2
Serened his face and stretched a welcome handF2
With civil utt'rance for the Bacchus hornG2
But now there tarries in her eye balls' disksC2
That nomad troop and naught her tongue may sayC2
Save jostling words that haunt her muffled earsC2
Like feeble wave beats in a deep sea caveH2
-
Ah the white stars O Dionysos nowI2
Have dropped their glittering blossoms slowly downJ2
Behind the snowy mountains in the WestK2
Aegeus sleeps hushed by my murmuring harpL2
And I have sung thy triumph let me dieB
