Despair Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBAAAAAAA| Shut in with phantoms of life's hollow hopes | A |
| And shadows of old sins satiety slew | B |
| And the young ghosts of the dead dreams love knew | B |
| Out of the day into the night she gropes | A |
| Behind her high the silvered summit slopes | A |
| Of strength and faith she will not turn to view | B |
| But towards the cave of weakness harsh of hue | B |
| She goes where all the dropsied horror ropes | A |
| There is a voice of waters in her ears | A |
| And on her brow a wind that never dies | A |
| One is the anguish of desired tears | A |
| One is the sorrow of unuttered sighs | A |
| And burdened with the immemorial years | A |
| Downward she goes with never lifted eyes | A |
