Within my veins it beatsA
And burns within my brainB
For when the year is sad and searC
I dream the dream againD
-
Ah over young am IE
God knows yet in this sleepF
More pain and woe than women knowG
I know and doubly deepF
-
Seven towers of shaggy rockH
Rise red to ragged skiesI
Built in a marsh that black and harshJ
To dead horizons liesI
-
Eternal sunset poursK
Around its warlock towersL
A glowing urn where garnets burnM
With fire dripping flowersL
-
O'er bat like turrets highE
Stretched in a scarlet lineN
The crimson cranes through rosy rainsO
Drop like a ruby wineN
-
Once in the banquet hallP
These scarlet storks are heardQ
I sit at board with men o' th' swordR
And knights of noble wordQ
-
Cased all in silver mailS
But he I love and fearC
In glittering gold beside me boldT
Sits like a lover nearC
-
Wild music echoes inU
The hollow towers thereV
Behind bright bars o' his visor starsW
Beam in his eyes and glareV
-
Wild music oozes fromX
Arched ceilings caked with whiteY
Groined pearl and floors like mythic shoresK
That sing to seas of lightY
-
Wild music and a feastZ
And one's belov d nearC
In burning mail why am I paleS
So pale with grief and fearC
-
Red heavens and slaughter redA2
The marsh to west and eastZ
Seven slits of sky seven casements highE
Flare on the blood red feastZ
-
Our torches tall are theseB2
Our revel torches sevenC2
That spill from gold soft splendors oldT
The hour of night elevenC2
-
No word The sparkle achesD2
In cups of diamond sparE2
That prism the light of ruddy whiteY
In royal wines of warF2
-
No word Rich plate that raysG2
Splashes of splitting firesL
Off beryl brims while sobs and swimsH2
Enchantment of lost lyresH2
-
I lean to him I loveI2
And in the silence sayH2
Would thy dear grace reveal thy faceH2
If love should crave and prayH2
-
Grave Silence like a kingJ2
At that strange feast is setK2
Grave Silence still as the soul's willL2
That rules the reason yetK2
-
But when I speak beholdT
The charm is snapped for lowG
Speaks out the mask o' his golden casqueJ2
At midnight be it soG
-
And Silence waits severeC
Till one sonorous towerM2
Owl swarmed that looms in glaring gloomsG
Sounds slow the midnight hourM2
-
Three strokes the knights ariseG
The palsy from them flungJ2
To meward mock like some hoarse rockJ2
When wrecking waves give tongueJ2
-
Six strokes and wailing outN2
The music hoots awayH2
The fiery glimmer of eve dies dimmerM2
The red grows ghostly grayH2
-
Nine strokes and dropping mouldT
The crumbling hall is leadA2
The plate is rust the feast is dustO2
The banqueters are deadA2
-
Twelve strokes pound out and rollP2
The huge walls writhe and shakeJ2
O'er hissing things with taloned wingsG
Christ Jesus let me wakeJ2
-
Then rattling in the nightY
His iron visor slipsG
In rotting mail a death's head paleS
Kisses my loathing lipsG
-
Two hell fierce lusts its eyesG
Sharp pointed like a knifeQ2
That flaming seem to say No dreamR2
No dream the truth of LifeQ2
