An Oldham County Weather PhilosopherA
'Who is Corncob Jones ' you sayB
Beateningest man and talkingestC
Talk and talk th' enduring dayC
Never even stop to restC
Keep on talking that a wayC
Talk you dead or do his bestC
-
We were there in that old barnD
Loafing 'round and swapping liesE
There was Wiseheart talking cornF
Me and Raider boosting ryesE
When old Corncob sprung a yarnD
Just to give us a surpriseE
-
'Why ' says he 'the twelvth of MayC
'Bout ten year ago why IG
Rickolects it to the dayC
By statistics hit wuz dryG
But hit must have rained I sayC
'Cause well I remember whyG
-
'Fer that night it 'gin to blowH
And to rain an' rained a weekI
When hit stopped hit 'gun to showH
Here an' there a clearin' streakI
Then set in to sleet an' snowH
Blamededst weather simply freakI
-
'An' the fruit wuz killt the cornF
Gin'ral an' the gardin truckJ
That 's experience an' no yarnD
You can't put hit down to luckJ
But to Natur' whar we larnD
Common sense we do by HuckJ
-
'Why as I have said to fore '-
Here he aimed a streak of brownD
At a hornet on the floorK
Got him too 'you put hit downD
To experience nothin' moreK
Whut they call hit there in townD
-
'Natur' jest rubs in the thingL
Jest won't let a man fergetC
Keeps hit up spring arter springL
Why Jest 'cause now you' kin betC
Blamed blackberries bloom by JingL
They jest need the cold an' wetC
-
'Every time the twelvth o' MayC
Cums around hit 's bound to rainD
Almost to the very dayC
Then hit turns an' snows againD
That 's experience I sayC
Whut we gets here in the main '-
-
'Talkin' 'bout experienceE
It don't help so much ' I saidC
'Not as much as common sense '-
Here old Corncob shook his headC
Spat and said 'Well that depen'sE
On whut common sense is Ned '-
-
Then old Wiseheart says says heM
'Common sense is somethin' moreK
Common sense comes nat'rallyM
Nothin' helps hit that I 'm shoreK
But hit helps the one you seeM
That 't was borned with rich er poor '-
-
Then says Corncob 'Talkin' nowD
Of experience That wuz whatC
We wuz talkin' 'bout SomehowD
You got stalded missed the spotC
Barbwired both yerself an' ploughD
An' ye have n't proved a jotC
-
'You can' t git along you knowD
'Thout experience Whar 'd we beM
If we missed hit Helps me soD
I kin reckin acktuallyM
When hit 's goin' to rain er snowD
Er turn hot er cold ' says heM
-
'Jest by thinkin' back by JackN
Hit 's not whut the weather isE
But whut hit wuz oncet long backN
In the times whut's gone Gee whizE
No man needs an almanackN
If he only noticesE
-
'Weather Why sirs summer er fallM
We kin lay hit by the heelsE
Hit cums easy naturalM
Jest like settin' down ter mealsE
Jest take notice that is allM
Do n't rely on how hit feelsE
-
'That 's experience Larn to knowD
Whut is whut an' then take heedC
So it cums we reap an' sowD
Jest accordin' as we 've seedC
How 't wuz done long years agoD
An' so profit that's my creed '-
-
Blamededst man you ever metC
This old Corncob Had a wayC
Of convincing you you betC
By just facts as you might sayC
Tell you when 'twas dry or wetC
And what 't would be to the dayC
