Chant Before Battle Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEEFFGGHHIJKLMM NNOOPPQR

EVER since man was man a Fiend has stoodA
Outside his House of GoodA
War with his terrible toys that win men's heartsB
To follow murderous artsB
His spurs death won are but of little useC
Except as old refuseD
Of Life to hang and testify with rustE
Of deeds long one with dustE
A rotting fungus on a log a treeF
A toiling worm or beeF
Serves God's high purpose here on Earth to buildG
More than War's maimed and killedG
The Hebetude of asses following stillH
Some Emperor's will to killH
Is that of men who give their lives for whatI
The privilege to be shotJ
Grant men more vision Lord to read thy wordsK
That are not guns and swordsL
But trees and flowers lovely forms of EarthM
And all fair things of worthM
So he may rise above the brute and snakeN
And of his reason makeN
A world befitting as thou hast designedO
His greater soul and mindO
So he may rid himself of worm and beastP
And sit with Love at feastP
And make him worthy to be named thy sonQ
As He thy Holy One AmenR
