A Far bell tinkles in the hollowA
And heart and soul are fain to followA
Gone is the rose and gone the swallowA
Autumn is hereB
-
The wild geese draw at dusk their harrowA
Above the 'Squam the ebb leaves narrowA
The sea winds chill you to the marrowA
Sad goes the yearC
-
Among the woods the crows are callingD
The acorns and the leaves are fallingD
At sea the fishing boats are trawlingD
Autumn is hereB
-
The jay among the rocks is screamingD
And every way with crimson streamingD
Far up the shore the foam is creamingD
Sleep fills the YearC
-
The chipmunk on the stones is barkingD
The red leaf every path is markingD
Where hills lean to the ocean harkingD
Autumn is hereB
-
The fields are starry with the asterE
Where Beauty dreams and dim DisasterE
Draws near through mists that gather fasterE
Farewell sweet YearC
-
Beside the coves driftwood is burningD
And far at sea white sails are turningD
Each day seems filled with deeper yearningD
Autumn is hereB
-
'Good bye good bye ' the Summer's sayingD
'Brief was my day as songs of MayingD
The time is come for psalms and prayingD
Good bye sweet Year '-
-
Brown bend the ferns by rock and boulderE
The shore seems greyer ocean olderE
The days are misty nights are colderE
Autumn is hereB
-
The cricket in the grass is cryingD
And sad winds in the old woods sighingD
They seem to say 'Sweet Summer's dyingD
Weep for the YearC
-
'She's wreathed her hair with bay and berryF
And o'er dark pools the wild fowl ferryF
Leans dreaming 'neath the wilding cherryF
Autumn is hereB
-
'Good bye good bye to Summer's gladnessG
To all her beauty mirth and madnessG
Come sit with us and dream in sadnessG
So ends the Year '-
