The way went under cedared gloomA
To moonlight like a cactus bloomA
Before the entrance of her tombA
-
I had an hour of night and thinB
Sad starlight and I set my chinB
Against the grating and looked inB
-
A gleam like moonlight through a squareC
Of opening I knew not whereC
Shone on her coffin resting thereC
-
And on its oval silver plateD
I read her name and age and dateD
And smiled soft thinking on my hateD
-
There was no insect sound to chirrC
No wind to make a little stirC
I stood and looked and thought on herC
-
The gleam stole downward from her headE
Till at her feet it rested redE
On Gothic gold that sadly saidE
-
God to her love lent a weak reedF
Of strength and gave no light to leadE
Pray for her soul for it hath needF
-
There was no night bird's twitter nearC
No low vague water I might hearC
To make a small sound in the earC
-
The gleam that made a burning markG
Of each dim word died to a sparkG
Then left the tomb and coffin darkG
-
I had a little while to waitD
And prayed with hands against the grateD
And heart that yearned and knew too lateD
-
There was no light below aboveH
To point my soul the way thereofH
The way of hate that led to loveH
