Rhyme Scheme: AAA BBB CCC DDD CCC EEE FEF CCC GGG DDD HHHThe way went under cedared gloom | A |
To moonlight like a cactus bloom | A |
Before the entrance of her tomb | A |
- | |
I had an hour of night and thin | B |
Sad starlight and I set my chin | B |
Against the grating and looked in | B |
- | |
A gleam like moonlight through a square | C |
Of opening I knew not where | C |
Shone on her coffin resting there | C |
- | |
And on its oval silver plate | D |
I read her name and age and date | D |
And smiled soft thinking on my hate | D |
- | |
There was no insect sound to chirr | C |
No wind to make a little stir | C |
I stood and looked and thought on her | C |
- | |
The gleam stole downward from her head | E |
Till at her feet it rested red | E |
On Gothic gold that sadly said | E |
- | |
God to her love lent a weak reed | F |
Of strength and gave no light to lead | E |
Pray for her soul for it hath need | F |
- | |
There was no night bird's twitter near | C |
No low vague water I might hear | C |
To make a small sound in the ear | C |
- | |
The gleam that made a burning mark | G |
Of each dim word died to a spark | G |
Then left the tomb and coffin dark | G |
- | |
I had a little while to wait | D |
And prayed with hands against the grate | D |
And heart that yearned and knew too late | D |
- | |
There was no light below above | H |
To point my soul the way thereof | H |
The way of hate that led to love | H |
