Once a rabbit crossed my roadA
When I went to see my auntB
And another time a toadA
Hopped right in my way You can'tB
Kill toads for that makes it rainC
And would spoil your day againD
-
But the rabbit if I couldE
I'd have killed him For one dayF
Once a boy he told me 'ShouldF
A wild rabbit cross your wayF
Look out for bad luck that isG
If your fingers ain't cross criss '-
-
But if I had shot him deadF
I'd not been unlucky noH
And not fallen out of bedF
That same night or stumped my toeH
Playing'I Spy' nor the stringI
Broken when I went to swingI
-
Talk about bad luck I guessJ
That old rabbit brought it WellK
Maudie had on her new dressJ
And I pushed her and she fellK
In a creek hole where you're boundF
To get wet so Maudie foundF
-
I I pulled her out that isG
Buddie helped me Bud's a boyL
Who was fishing there And LizG
Maud's old nurse she took my toyL
My toy whip and she was madF
Whipped my legs and called me badF
-
Then she said Maud might have drownedF
And the creek was full of'dumbM
Pollywogs and snakes ' a soundF
Whipping just might help me someM
Maybe Maud would catch a coldF
And my mother should be toldF
-
No sir I don't want to seeN

Cross my road Why gemenieH
That's a swear word Maudie saysP
