Windy the sky and madA
Surly the gray March dayB
Bleak the forests and sadA
Sad for the beautiful MayB
-
On maples tasseled with redC
No blithe bird swinging sungD
The brook in its lonely bedC
Complained in an unknown tongueD
-
We walked in the wasted woodE
Her face as the Spring's was fairF
Her blood was the Spring's own bloodG
The Spring's her radiant hairF
-
And we found in the windy wildH
One cowering violetI
Like a frail and tremulous childH
In the caked leaves bowed and wetJ
-
And I sighed at the sight with painK
For the May's warm face in the woodE
May's passions of sun and rainK
May's raiment of bloom and of budG
-
But she said when she saw me sadA
Tho' the world be gloomy as fateL
And we yearn for the days to be gladA
Dear heart we can afford to waitL
-
For know one beautiful thingM
On the dark day's bosom curledN
Makes the wild day glad to singM
Content to smile at the worldN
-
For the sinless world is fairF
And man's is the sin and gloomO
And dead are the days that wereP
But what are the days to comeQ
-
Be happy dear heart and waitL
For the past is a memoryR
Tho' to day seem somber as fateL
Who knows what to morrow will beR
-
-
-
And the May came on in her charmsS
With a twinkle of rustling feetT
Blooms stormed from her luminous armsS
And honey of smiles that were sweetT
-
Now I think of her words that dayB
This day that I longed so to seeR
That finds her dead with the MayB
And the March but a memoryR
